A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a black pick and shovel saltirewise above center in front of a scarlet field bearing two buff vertical bars and at base a green chevron shape charged with a white star, all below a light blue mountain range and white clouds; attached below a gold scroll inscribed PILLARS OF SUPPORT in black letters.
The pick and shovel are a historical allusion to Helena, Montana, the units location, which was built on a gold mining site. This part of Montana is a land of tall rugged mountains containing a wealth of minerals and is symbolized by the mountains and clouds. Scarlet and buff are the colors associated with the Support branch and the vertical bars or pillars allude to the support mission. The support mission is further represented by the chevron shape with green representative of the Army. The white star is for leadership and refers to Helena as the capital of the state. The circular shape of the device symbolizes a prospectors gold pan recalling the State motto: Gold and Silver.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 4 March 1986.
